Hello Tetiana, Both are adverbs. 'pourtant' means in English 'yet'. It could have also the sense of 'but'. Il a raté son examen. Pourtant, il n'est pas bête. He failed his exam, and yet he's not stupid. mais pourtant but nevertheless, but even so c'est pourtant facile! but it's easy! "Cependant" means 'nevertheless' or 'however'. It could be a synonym of 'pourtant' , but means as well 'pendant ce temps' (during this time).
