It also refers to things or persons, that were previously mentioned or far in place or time. 'That' as a relative pronoun differs from 'that' as a demonstrative one 'that ,those' . The relative pronoun 'that' is equivalent to 'which' and points out a person or a thing spoken of before in a sentence and may be both singular or plural. "This is the place, that I told you about." "these" is just a plural form of "those" while "those" for "that". that/which: "that" should be used to introduce a restrictive clause. eg. 'the house THAT is painted red has been sold.' here, the clause "that is painted red" is describing on one particular house. "which" should be used to introduce a non-restrictive or parenthetical clause. eg. 'the house, WHICH is painted red, has been sold.' while here, the clause "which is painted red" may refer to not only one house, but a lot more houses in red paint. :)
