while both ^ ^ answers are right, I'll just share other info.
did you know that auroras (an atmospheric phenomenon consisting of bands of light caused by charged solar particles following the earth's magnetic lines of force) can only be seen in these areas (north & south pole)? but they are named differently:
aurora borealis: the aurora of the northern hemisphere.
aurora australis: the aurora of the southern hemisphere.

The Arctic is the region around the North Pole. For the South ole we have the Antarctic. Both are polar regions.

Polar regions are the areas of the globe surrounding the poles also known as frigid zones. The North Pole and South Pole being the centers, these regions are dominated by the polar ice caps, resting respectively on the Arctic Ocean and the continent of Antarctica. Polar sea ice is currently diminishing, possibly as a result of anthropogenic global warming.
Arctic is the region around the Earth's North Pole, opposite the Antarctic region around the South Pole. The Arctic includes the Arctic Ocean (which overlies the North Pole) and parts of Canada, Greenland (a territory of Denmark), Russia, the United States (Alaska), Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland.
