I think maybe you want to say "桌上有几本书". We'd prefer to use a unit in front of a countable noun if we want to mention the quantity of it. Use 本 as the unit for 书. To say there are only few books, use "几本". Or use "一堆书" "许多书" to describe a bunch of books. 你可以用“桌上有几本书”。我们可以用“本”来作为书的单位。如果要说书的数量很多，可以用“桌上有一堆书”。

there are few books on the desk, should tralaste as 桌子上的书很少~it is negation if "there are a few books on the desk" then it should be 桌子上有一些书
