It's called ”お守り(Omamori)" in Japanese. It'll protect you through the year. You recieve it at the begining of the year and return it to the temple(where you recieved it) after you keep it one year of period. I said "recieve omamori", because in traditional way, you should say like this instead of "buy omamori".
私はお守りをお寺で受けました。I recieved my omamori at the temple
(Watashi wa omamori wo otera de ukemashita)
私はお守りをお寺に返しました。I returned my omamori to the temple.
(Watashi wa omamori wo otera ni kaeshimashita)
After you return the omamori to the temple, the priest of the temple will burn those omamoris for purifying them. You DO NOT through it into the bin as the omamori is a holy thing(item).
And DO NOT open omamori even you have a big of curiosity to know what's in it.
Sometimes omamori disappears unexpectedly...it mean that your omamori saved your life from danger you would have(like an accident), so you thank to your omamori with a feeling of gratitude.
There are so many different types of Omamori in Japan, so you should check the meaning of them first, and recieve it when you need their help :)
Hope this information helped you a bit ;-) Best of luck!
