Russian and Ukrainian are undoubtedly different languages. But living in Ukraine you can easily understand Russian people as most people in Ukraine speak Russian. As for Russian people they have difficulty in undestanding Ukrainian...There are lots of similar words with the help of which you can guess what the subject is...
As for me I speak Russian every day cause all people around speak Russian as well though I live in Ukraine. In Russian there are lots of same words with different meanings (homonyms)...

Hi Roi,
Russian and Ukrainian are two different languages, although they have a common origin. They both belong to the East Slavic language group. There are many similiarities in grammar structures and vocabulary, but still the difference is big enough, especially in the sound systems.

Well, as for me there isn't much same words with different meaning
for example:
- краватка (UA) = галстук (RU) = tie
- краватка (RU) = ліжко (UA) = small bed
Some words have different gender:
- собака (RU female) = собака (UA male) = dog
There are lots of words with different spelling which has the same meaning:
- карандаш (RU) = олівець (UA) = pencil
I think Ukrainian has more influenced from western languages through its history:
- фортеця (UA) = крепость (RU) = fortress
- файно (UA) = хорошо (RU)= fine
But of course many of Russian and Ukrainian words have the same roots but their derivation, suffix, ending are different.

There are many related words with approximately the same meanings, but very often they are written and pronounced differently (the difference between Spanish and Portuguese may be somewhat similar). Sometimes the words are the same, but their usage is slightly (or largely) different. That is why most speakers of Ukrainian whose native language is Russian often make mistakes of varying severity in word choice and pronunciation.
As for the "Russian dance" question -- unfortunately, I do not know what it means. What is the context?
