Sure. If you are talking about something that happened before, the simple past is appropriate.
I never saw the man who stabbed me in the back.
I never saw it coming.
If the action is continuing into the present or still important in the present use the present perfect.
I've never seen a purple cow
and hope to never see one;
but I can tell you anyhow
I'd rather see than be one.
