I think many of us have different opinions on different levels.
If you are talking about the political system, then I generally have a low opinion of politicians in general (not just China). I remember Tianamen square, have read a great deal about the treatment of Christians and other religious followers, and know of a few other ugly incidents, and they were terrible for the people who lived there. But I don't think of a country as synonymous with their politics. (Quite often, the country is a victim of politics).
If you are talking about the people, then I think of all people as individuals. Therefore, I don't see all of China as what I may find in one person. I expect there to be good people and bad people and many people in between those two positions. That's how it is with people. I generally find people interesting, and that includes the Chinese people who are my colleagues, or the ones with whom I have made friends.
If you are talking about the history, then I am fascinated by Chinese history. I would love to see many of the places I have read about.
If you are talking about the land, then there are many places in China i want to visit.
I want to make it to see the Great Wall, the Silk Road, experience the country as close to natively as possible, eat there, meet friends there, and carry those friendships forward. The people and the culture are what make it interesting for me. I'm much more interested in China, the people and culture.
My wife and I are planning to make a trip in the next few years. I'm looking forward to it.
