Can anyone tell me how common is knowledge of International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)? I had a video call with choir students at Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in Brasil 🇧🇷. Almost all of them knew IPA, but I wonder if this was partly because they were singers and singers are more commonly expected to learn IPA.

Not common at all, it's mostly just people who study Linguistics and some other language nerds. I didn't even know that choir singers knew about it, but it does make sense.
