I'm Rachel, I come from Changchun (China), and I've been living in Belgium for many years, which means I'm used to meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures. I'm passionate about Chinese culture, especially Tang poetry and calligraphy, as well as the history of Europe. In 2022, I got a certificate of professional competency in teaching Chinese (Mandarin) as a second language from the International Profession Certification Association (IPA). I also I hold a degree in business administration. I've been teaching on Italki since 2020, and I deeply enjoy the contact with students, whatever their age or level. I faced difficulties learning languages. I still do, actually. Language is primarily a tool of communication. Its purpose is to exchange information. Therefore, speaking and listening should make up the lion share of your study. That's what a tutor is for! As for vocabulary, we often memorize individual words, only to forget them soon after. I believe reading articles of your level (or slightly higher) is a much more efficient way to come across phrases and words in context. Context is everything! To me, writing and reading go hand in hand. As for reading, you could come up with your own material (from your textbook, a Chinese book you're reading, etc.). Don't worry, though: I can also supply articles relevant to your areas of interest. We would read them together, clarify the grammar, work on your pronunciation, then discuss the contents.
