It was a wonderful lesson! Mike is a super-professional English teacher. He not only explains well but also feels when the student finds it difficult to answer and selects simpler words and expressions. Thanks a lot to Mike for your patience and your time! Sincerely, your student, Sergio! I recommend this teacher to everyone!

As a widely known Chinese saying goes, "铁打的营盘,流水的兵", which literally translates to "An iron camp, flowing soldiers." This vivid metaphor aptly captures the idea that the institution is permanent and enduring , while the individuals within it are constantly changing and moving on. Applying this concept to government, the most significant difference between career bureaucrats and elected presidents lies in this contrast of permanence versus transience. Bureaucrats typically spend long careers within the administrative system, building deep institutional knowledge and providing continuity, much like the steadfast "iron camp" that remains in place. In stark contrast, an elected president, bound by term limits and the political cycle, is inherently a temporary figure, serving a fixed period before departing – embodying the "flowing soldiers" who pass through the camp. This fundamental difference in tenure shapes their perspectives, priorities, and roles within the machinery of government.

Arrogance abounds, and the declaration by the Sun King, Louis XIV, "I am the state," serves as the perfect footnote. Even the most politically naïve individual with a modicum of sense understands that individuals will one day perish, and regimes will inevitably change eventually. Usually, regimes live for decades, countries live for centuries, and civilizations live even longer. However, leaders, no matter how great they are, subject to human mortality, cannot. Given the Sun King's intellect and capabilities, he surely grasped this concept. Therefore, the only plausible explanation for such a counterintuitive proclamation is his conceit.

Hayek and Friedman founded an economic forum, the Mont Pelerin Society, to advocate for liberal economics. Coincidentally, Hayek became an idol for British PM Margaret Thatcher, while Friedman became a close economic advisor to Ronald Reagan. Despite Thatcher's and Reagan's acknowledged limited knowledge of economics, the spirit of Mont Pelerin significantly shaped Western economic development in the 1980s. In the book "How States Thin," Mearsheimer points out: "Practical men are usually the slaves of some defunct economist. Madmen in authority are distilling their frenzy from some academic scribbler of a few years back." He also notes that "Richard Nixon was not versed in economics, but his basic frame of reference was Keynesian. He believed the government faced a choice between inflation and unemployment. By contrast, Ronald Reagan was so influenced by Friedman’s monetarist theories’". This raises a question: How deep should a president's understanding of economic issues be?
