Hi! I’m Melissa, a TEFL, IELTS, and Business English-certified teacher from Cape Town, South Africa, currently studying a BA in Communications. I have several years of experience teaching children, teenagers, and adults from diverse backgrounds, helping them make real progress in a supportive and engaging environment.
My lessons are friendly, patient, and results-focused. I tailor each class to your goals—whether you want to improve conversational fluency, prepare for IELTS, succeed in interviews, or build confidence in professional communication. I also provide optional practice to help you apply what you learn in real life.
I teach a wide range of students, from young children, to teenagers and adults, and I adapt my approach to suit different learning styles and personalities.
My love for travel brings a cultural and conversational element into my lessons, making them engaging, relatable, and enjoyable.
I offer lessons in conversational English, kids’ courses, book-based learning, IELTS preparation, and Business English with interview practice.
My goal is to help you feel confident, capable, and comfortable using English every day.

Au PairOne of the main reasons I was hired by the family to be the au pair for their children was to help them learn and improve their English as it was not their native language. This experience will help me on italki as I had one on one and teaching with each of the three children every single day. I would help them with homework as well as prepare my own materials to ensure the children were having fun while learning new and exciting things in the English language.
2012 - 2019
Volunteer TeacherI have been a volunteer teacher since I was 19 years old. I have taught people of all ages and all backgrounds with varying levels of English. Although in this capacity my role was not to teach English but to teach lessons in English it has given me great experiences and helped me to grow as a teacher and develop my own teaching style that I feel has already helped me so much on italki as a community tutor. I have taught lessons every single week, sometimes more than once a week.

It was very cool and funny lesson! We were laughing all the time)) My girls always say that you are their friend, they wait for these talkings. Even my younger daughter (she's 2.5) trying to tell stories in English. But first I thought that she is so little)) And I see that English of my oldest daughter is improving) she is trying to speak more and more, because she likes you so much and she wants to tell you everything)

Melissa is a very good teacher. She has a clear accent, which makes it easy to understand her. She is very talkative and polite, and learning with her feels natural. The class goes by very quickly.
She made me feel very comfortable during the lesson, even when I made mistakes or forgot words. That made a big difference to me.
