Hi I’m Dennis and I’m currently based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and have been a local here since birth.
I’m currently working full time as a developer, and in my free time I enjoy teaching people languages. Language learning has been one of my oldest hobbies simply because it helps you to adopt different perspectives and also to share mine.
Growing up in a Chinese household, I use 3 languages on a daily basis. And that allows me to experience language from an expat’s point of view.Ik als leerkracht
Looking back on my time on iTalki, my students and I enjoy digging into the educational aspects of Vietnamese. We are both curious about how the language sounded outside the textbooks, and how the aesthetics of Vietnamese is manifested through the lifestyle of its native speakers and the geography in which they live.
That being said, I like to think Vietnamese will aid my students to uncover countless pieces of stories and anecdotes that are confined within its borders. As a teacher I tend to act like a citizen journalist eager to share his findings to whomever needs it.Mijn lessen en manier van lesgeven
To continue doing what we enjoy, I often prepare a set topic with pictures and encourage the students to expand the topic using limited amount of new words and phrases. Spontaneous activities can pop up depending on the those topics too, like debates or problem solving activities.
It'd be nice if I can somehow make each lesson resemble a small expat meetup where we share our proudest moments and soak in the lively atmosphere in some idyllic Vietnamese coffee shop.Mijn lesmateriaal

The teacher has great energy and we converse and develop vocabulary that's related to business-professionalism. Because the teacher is also a white-collar professional, I think he is someone good for engagement, who can understand office politics, clothing, and other topics related to the office.

Having a structured approach is great for beginners but when one studied Vietnamese for a long time, finding that way for additional improvement may not be trouble-free. The teacher has helped me by allowing myself to drive the lessons but also provide feedback and suggested material. His having great English usage (better than many teachers) helps with the lessons especially when it's business-focused. In a way, it feels more like having a business conversational partner which I enjoy. If you're looking for a partner to induce you to drive your learning especially in business, he may be someone you should consider.

I've managed to communicate with the supermarket staff and give directions in Vietnamese thanks to Dennis' "Getting by in Vietnam with basic Vietnamese" course.
When studying the course, you choose the topics and Dennis delivers a tailor-made lesson using authentic materials like Facebook posts and podcasts.
He shares a lot of personal anecdotes to help you understand when and where to use the learnt language.
In addition, he takes the time to ensure that your pronunciation is on point and that the language you learn is authentic to make sure that you'll be understood in the real world.
