In this day and age, reality shows have attained greater levels of popularity, seeing as how they have generated a considerable amount of appeal among its viewers. It begs the question of why they are so popular and what exactly it is that motivates people to indulge in the same.
The great majority of participants in such shows is composed of those with inadequate educational backgrounds, who are in pursuit of their "fifteen minutes of fame". Such shows are often on the receiving end of heavy criticism for making celebrities out of certain undeserving, publicity-hogging individuals and for glorifying vulgarity and materialism. The reason that reality show participants of the aforementioned kind, become famous rapidly, is that they are often placed on a pedestal by young viewers, and hence, adopted by the same as idols and role models, factors dictating which have been explained below.
There is no shortage of studies that show that teenagers are the primary viewers of such shows, followed by unemployed adults, which can prove to be dangerous since young viewers are highly impressionable and hence, regard reality show participants as role models and subsequently, worth imitating. And while it is far from adequate, many young viewers even end up following in the footsteps of their "heroes", to eventually participate in reality shows in the future, becoming a part of a relentless cycle that goes on and on, in the process.
There is no denying that reality shows are great sources of entertainment, but it is important to note that they are not representative of the realities of everyday life, and it is not advisable to imitate or take what is portrayed in them, at face value. Therefore, it is highly recommendable to impose an age limit upon those that can watch reality shows, so that young TV viewers are spared being influenced negatively by the same from such an early age.
