Well, they are different consonants in English. Both are voiced sounds, but V is pronounced with your bottom lip under your top row of teeth whereas W is pronounced by passing air through pursed lips. The confusion comes from the fact that W and V are often pronounced the same in other languages but this is not the case in English.
