In my country, Italy, people usually celebrate with their family having a great dinner where particular food are served, like zampone (which means big pork paw) and cotechino (a kind of cooked salami) with lenticchie. The tradition says that the more lenticchie you eat the more money you will have in the New Year. Other typical food are Pandoro and panettone, two kind of desserts that are always eaten at Christmas too. People wait until midnight playing games like bingo. When midnight approaches people watch at tv the countdown. At midnight we all have a toast with kisses under the mistletoe and watch or do fireworks. Young people generally celebrate instead with friends in their house or in restaurants and bars and sometimes also in the mountains in vacation houses. Everyone always enjoys New Year's celebrations!

Great description! You could also say lenticchie perhaps to refer to a specific Italian preparation, but there is an English word. :)
