#moreфон2020 - Day 7 📍“They’re taking the hobbits to Isengard”📍 Check out what I found in a bookshop yesterday. This is an extract from “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare. He is obviously a legendary writer who as I know contributed about 2000 new words to modern English. To all my fellow teachers - isn’t it just amazing to see “SAW YOU him today?” ?? Let me break it down... In the Middle Ages it used to be correct not to use any auxiliary verbs (do/does) in such types of English questions. So basically Shakespeare and other folks just used inversion. Seems to be more logical and practical, doesn’t it? I really wish English was smth like that now: - Speak you English? - What say you? - Where lives he? - Saw you that? Btw, if you ever try to use these medieval questions in 2020, people will probably think that you are an elf from Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” book (see the title of the post and guess the character) #moreфон_italki
