Hi guys. Could any of you explain this to me: Is there any difference between "point", "period" and "dot"? Thanks a lot

point - the very tip of something. Like the point of a spear, or a pen. It can also sometimes be used to mean a little dot, but I think of it as more 3D generally. period - a dot at the end of a sentence - like this one. (“Period” is American English, it’s called a “full stop” in UK English - if you ever hear this word used it means the same thing). dot - a very small circle. So a full stop/period is a dot. I think of it as being flat (like a dot made with a pen or paintbrush or clothes with dots on them) Hope that helps 😁.

Although can be used interchangeably in some ways, there are some usages that are more contextually correct. Point - used often in mathematical sums, i.e. Pi is defined as 3.14. (Pi is defined as three point one four) Period - in American English, used to name the end of the sentence. Dot - smallish sized circle, more pictorial in nature than the other two usages. The intersection with the other two are it is the word of choice when it comes to describing an email address or an internet related activities, i.e. You can locate them at [email protected] (read as: Name at internetX dot com) or the Dot com boom.

For them all, you use the same character (press the same key) on your computer or phone. But, when you talk about them, you use the correct word depending on the context. "Point" is used when speaking about decimals (tenths, hundredths, etc.) of numbers. You write, "the temperature is 23.8" and you say, "the temperature is twenty-three point eight". You write, "the value of pi is 3.14159" and you say, "the value of pi is three point one four one five nine". "Period", in North American English, is used at the end of a regular sentence or at the end of an abbreviation. "In the test, Juan wrote an exclamation mark and Pablo used a question mark, but I used a period, and I was right." "I lost a mark on the test because I didn't put a period after 'etc' in my answer to question seven." "Dot" is used to separate parts of a web address or an email. You write, "italki.com", but you say, "italki dot com". You write "[email protected]", but you say, " juan dot pablo at messages dot net".
