Learning about the other culture helps make the language learning fun and it is generally a good topic of conversation that most people are interested in. From my experience, the most important thing when learning a language is to keep it fun, and exchanging information about different cultures can help in this sense.

I think culture is important for understanding the idioms, the colloquialisms, humorous and witty conversation. Also, to avoid offending people by using the wrong phrase. The dictionary definitions of words are sometimes totally wrong in real conversations. Knowledge of the culture is important here.

Knowing about something doesn't mean following it or believing in it. Avoiding contact with the culture is avoiding 50% of the language. Nobody has to change their beliefs to learn a language, but if they totally avoid the culture how do they expect to learn anything beyond booking tickets and finding food? Any meaningful conversation implies some basic understanding of the ground rules of the language.

Personally, I always learn about the culture.

I think learning  about other cultures is interesting in case of tourism, or watching documentaries, but I don't think it's very helpful in learning a language.
