A Guide To Unexpected Situations In Russia

Whether you’re an amateur or a seasoned traveller, Russia will always find a way to surprise you. Even though such surprises are not always unpleasant, it’s vital to know what to say in nonstandard situations in which some amount risk is involved. Of course, you can try to solve misunderstandings with a bit of light-hearted laughter, but note that it might not work on tougher individuals.

Hi. Sorry, but i think it is rather .. bad article. I dont't mean any offence. But just think ... U are travelling, in russia or other country. What do u usually do, and where? U take a photo, looking for some place, eating, drinking and other. Most of that are popular places, with many other turists or locals. So.. All this gangstars what u are toaking about... definitely exist, but the chance to meat them is very little... in some pub for exemple. But, if they need your money, they don't have it, that mean, they can't go to such places. Other situation, in the deep suburb. Yes, the concentrate of criminal persons is higher, but i don't know the reason, how can  u be there! There is nothing interesting for tourist. Or u will go there with company or local guid, or other person, who know local mentality. I think... there are many other unexpected situations can happen with u: problem to findout bus shedule, ATM, weather forecast, roads rout, and many many other. Just ask your friends who was in russia... did they have many problem with police or criminals?

Katarina, you mean police officers or street gangsters?

It is very bad idea to give money to police officers. They most likely don't take money, but you become a criminal.

If you meet street gangsters, all depend of street gangsters. If they need only money, you walk away. If they want to have fun, you'll be beaten. But tourist unlikely meets street gangsters in Russia.

Irina, are still there some tourists in Russia? Really?! Probably they haven't read this article yet)))

To be serious, I really enjoyed it. You made me recall all this streets fighting stuff. I haven't been to Russia for 20 years and thought it all in the past. It seems to me not much have changed since then...

I like the article, and think it is more of a light-hearted piece rather than being very serious.

Katarina, Russia is very big and very different. But I think, in Russia you can meet the street gangsters if only you are looking for them. I have seen the street gangsters twenty years ago. They became the businessmen or were imprisoned or dead.  Young people no longer want to become the gangsters. Young people want to become the businessmen or officials. Bandits has become much smaller.

In my opinion, recommendations in this article no work

I think, If you do meet the gangsters, the best strategy  is fast run.
