Hello Marie. You may want to look at a parallel text of short stories originally written in French with the text also written in English. I’m currently reading one in Spanish and English and have discovered (not surprisingly) that the translations typically aren’t “word for word.” Usually, the translator will try to capture the essence of the idea/phrase and not, necessarily, the verbatim word for word translation since it may not always make sense. Additionally, when I’ve written an English idiomatic expression, I find that it quite often will not translate well into Spanish so you may need to reconsider how you actually “say” something to make it more clear to your reader. Hope this helps!
