Has anyone read the book《1984》?

It’s written by George Orwell.

I heard of this book years ago but as I didn't pay much attention to my friend's recommondation,I only started reading it recently. Surprisingly I find it so great…engaging...compelling...(let's see what else adjectives I canthink of…)that I can hardly stop reading it now. I'm not very political though: P

I’'m still learning English,so if anyone of you has read this book and is attracted by its theme and plot, please add me and tell me what you think!

haha ,anyone who enjoys language learning, culture shock, etc. come and chat with me : )

I hated the 1984 when I first read it...because I didn't understand Orwel's insights into oppressive governments.  They have a desire to maintain their power by controlling not only people's physical possessions, but their freedom to assemble, their freedom to create, their freedom to speak (newspeak limits your thoughts by limiting your vocabulary), and, ultimately deciding what thoughts are acceptable thoughts.  No deviation in thought, emotion, or action is to be tolerated.

The two most disturbing parts of the book is when we see those most loyal to Big Brother tortured by Big Brother and (of course) Winston's closing thoughts (which I won't spoil for you).

1984 remains a strong call to vigilance and courage.

"Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury is another good one.

I've read the book. If you like distopian literature, do read Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and Yevgeny Zamyatin's We, too!
