I often have a similar experience. In my course of using this website, I have made contact to many individuals, but the number of people that I actually end up practicing with is low. What I think might make you more attractive is having a profile description and picture that makes people think that you're an interesting person to talk to, and where you clearly state your goals for your language learning with italki. I also think it is a good idea to try to introduce yourself in a friendly way when writing your first message so that you leave a good impression. I also made good experiences with not trying to have too much small talk about irrelevant things (weather, health, etc) but instead focus on the language exchange aspect. In the end, if you don't have any luck today, maybe you have better luck tomorrow. Also keep in mind that some italki teachers offer comparably cheap language lessons so if you have disposable income, that is a very easy way to find a competent person that can assist you with language learning. Not every teacher is great, of course. You can also use other language exchange websites or smartphone applications.

I apologies for not replying to you. However, I want to point out that it isn't anything personal, but rather than I simply don't have time to respond to everyone. I currently have 123 unread emails in my inbox, and many more that I have read. Right now, I am not looking for any more language partners since I have a few core people I speak to already. I am available occasionally at short notice for a chat, but that's normally when I wake up and think to myself, "lets Skype with someone and practice my Russian today." Please don't take the lack of replies personally,  just realise that English speakers get contacted a lot, so try to make your email stand out. If I have a spare moment to Skype I will contact you.
