Yes I understand him but I have to concentrate to do so. Whereas normally (most) American accents are no different to (most) British ones in terms of ease of understanding for me.
'Learnt' is actually the more common participle in the UK (or at least as common as the 'ed' form, as are 'burnt', 'smelt' etc.)
Anyway... I guess the '88' is because he likes Dale Earnhardt Jr. No surprise, what with Nascar being huge in the south of the United States. 88 has also been adopted by neo-Nazis as a symbol of sorts, with 'H' being the 8th letter of the alphabet, 88 = HH = Heil Hitler (thank you American History X.)
