Generally I've struggled to find language partners who can commit to regular times, me included. This is why I always book a teacher because I know they will commit to me and because i've paid I'll commit to them. However I have met some interesting and helpful people in the language exchange, the exchanges just haven't lasted long, one exchange actually turned into a paid teaching opportunity for me which was great!

I had one awful experience with a guy who I very patiently listened to for 30minutes, made a few corrections and was generally very encouraging towards him. When it was my turn to speak French, he spent the entire 30 minutes laughing at everything I said. At several points in the session he got up and walked around his room not paying me attention to me and talking to me from across the room! It was very unpleasant and awkward. I blocked him after the session :(

I've had about the same experience as Rebecca. I've tried doing language exchanges but they end up being extremely difficult to coordinate. It's also hard if you're starting from a very beginner. It's hard for someone who isn't a teacher attempt to teach someone the basics.

My worst languages exchanges have been with young people, they are always extremely nervious which force me to   play the role of a teacher,  guiding them and leading the conversation  the whole  time.

Yes I think language exchange at beginner level would be very difficult as it does take some skill and understanding of how we acquire language to teach complete beginners.

It's true if you were a very beginner in a new language, it is very hard to do something productivity for you. The native speaker only could provide a language atmosphere for you, or correct you. So, it really very boring. Because every word you heard thousands of times, if there were no interesting content, it very hard for a native speaker to listen to their mother language from a foreigner. Be patient, sometimes, I really want to give up studying English. But when found so many funny stories and interesting things from English book or website, I am truly motivated. So, as a new language learn we had better encourage each other and help each other.

Plus, I have a lot of time to learn English, and I also got some time could teach you Chinese. I am looking forward to sharing with a new language for each other. If you are a native English speaker and want to learn Chinese. Honestly, there is nearly 2 billion people speak Chinese, and it is the fast developing country in the world. Speak English help to link the world, speak Chinese help world to find fortune in China.
