Гадкий Утёнок sentence question

I am reading Гадкий Утёнок in Russian and trying to understand this sentence:

солнце озаряло поля и луга, но в чаще лопуха было глухо и дико, как в густом лесу.

The second half is confusing to me. The sun was shining on the field and meadows, but . . .

Is the sentence saying the grass is as thick as a dense forest? Help!

Yeah duckling is small so thick grass is like a dense forest for him.

Вот так могут выглядеть заросли лопуха:

Гадкий утенок в зарослях (в чаще лопуха):

Да, чаШа и чаЩа - разные слова: чаша = a bowl, чаща = a thicket or a dense forest.

Upd. Это не мои фото, из гугла. This is not my photographs, it is from Google.

You're absolutely right, this is the hyperbole.

Алексей, where the first photograph was taken? We don't have such large burdocks here in Moscow:/
It is in line with the story: "large dock-leaves so tall that small children could stand upright under the largest":)
