nella = in + la ( means "in the"). they just use one word instead of these two

in means "in"

la is an article, feminine, so the difference is between using an article (nella) and not using an article (in). There is also "nel" and "nello" when the noun is masculine.

in  : c'è qualcuno in casa? per chiedere se c'è qualcuno dentro la casa;

nella ; c'è qualcuno nella nostra casa? in questo caso si specifica nella nostra casa, non una altra casa.
