tegen de vaak

Een Week later nodigde ze al haar vriedinnen uit.

Gezellig op theevisite. Ze praatten honderduit.

Ze hielden kleine en grote praatjes,

groene en gele, en praatjes tegen de vaak.

Mevrouw Justien by Isabelle Desegher

What does 'praatjes tegen de vaak' mean?

Does it mean thay talk to fight off sleep?

Please respond in English. Thank you!

Hi Mia. Yes, it means "slaap", but nobody uses it anymore.
The only way it's still used is when we refer to "Klaas Vaak". In Holland "Klaas Vaak" is the name we use for a fictional character that sprinkles sand into the eyes of children to help them go to sleep.

Yes, vaak does mean sleep but it's old Dutch which is not commonly used anymore.

I think your translation is correct.

As a native speaker I cannot say that I've ever heard of this... when was the book published?

I would not spend time memorizing words like that, too archaic.

anyway, good for you that you are reading in your foreign language.... if I may.... can I recommend

Titaantjes and De Uitvreter.... my favorite books in Dutch!
