It's hard to know what people will find addictive.

I am a little ashamed to admit it, but I love the novels by Lee Child about a character named "Jack Reacher." For me, they are true "page-turners" and I keep reading to find out what will happen next. They are action novels. The protagonist is a somewhat mysterious character, who had been a military policeman; he is a sort of superman who regularly takes on four or five or six bad guys at once and can always beat them--even if they are armed and he is not. He usually warns them first not to try it. If you know me, you wouldn't think I'd like that kind of book, but I do. He is such a skillful story-teller that you can almost believe the story while you were reading it, and then afterwords you realize that it is completely impossible.

Jack Reacher does not like to be impeded by possessions. He has no house and no car, and travels randomly around with no luggage, carrying nothing but a toothbrush. He wears cheap utilitarian clothing and when it gets dirty he throws it away and buys more; he actually explains his reasoning, and that it costs less to buy new clothes every few days than to incur all the costs of an apartment or a house with a washing machine. It's not completely clear to me why he doesn't get bored in between adventures, but he never seems to have to wait long for one. Almost every time he steps out of a bus he lands in some intricate plot.
