Why are you learning a new language? Hello everybody. Today I just got curious about why people learn another language and I want to know the differents reasons why people do it. Well, about me... I don't know. I learnt English (the little I know) and I didn't even notice it. I just used to watch a lot of series in English and when I noticed I had the basics so it made me feel interested to learn even more, so now I'm on my way to be fluent. I also want to learn Spanish and maybe Japonese, although I know it's a hard language... But who knows... Well, the reason for me to learn is because I'm completely in love with new cultures and nothing is more satisfactory than be able to communicate with another person who doesn't speak your language. So what's your reasons to do it? What language(s) do you want to learn and why?

A big part is "to prove to myself that I can."

I studied Spanish in high school. I did OK but I learned nothing. I somehow got the idea that I "was not good at languages." So I lived another sixty years, feeling slightly ashamed of myself for only speaking one language, and then I decided that was silly, and now that I was retired I would learn another language.

I am studying other things too, not only languages. But I mainly study languages, because I want to use the time that I commute to work for something useful. Listening to an mp3 recording is relatively easy in the morning when you just woke up, or in the evening after a hard days work. I listen to podcasts or music in English, German and Korean. I can also study a book about physics or computer science, but in a crowded train that is too stressful. I cannot concentrate. I am relatively quickly distracted. So it is a practical balance between something useful and something amusing.

Well , I think learning a new language just for fun doesn't make sense maybe someone would like to know about other cultures but for me I don't learn language for fun because I don't have time to do that so Iam learning English because it is important everywhere it is the second international language in the world and as you see English discussion is the most part for people to write their questions or ask about something and Iam learning also German because I need it for my job
