it is vibrant, multiethnic, hospitable and charming.
it was is first capital of italy. do no miss the egiptyan museum and the museum of the cinema.

I can't think of anything regarding tandems. I would check universities once you're there or see if there are any Facebook groups for tandems/language learning for the city where you're going.
It's not a big city, but really beautiful and very interesting to visit (wonderful architecture, sea, mountains - you will surely find something you like!). You will have the chance to meet students for language exchange, as Trieste hosts the SSLMIT (university for translators and interpreters). It is very close to Slovenia, so you might visit this country as well.
Bologna is also a good place for students, with many universities and all kinds of events, but it's bigger and chaotic.

Hi! I recommended you go in the North East of Italy too (if you can) for example in Venice and Trieste! there are beautiful cites and in Treste you can find also a lot of students and I think that it would be easy to you to find a language tandem. Have a nice trip! :)
