Grammar? what is the next step?

I'm a beginner  in Japanese and so far I have learned hiragana and I'm working on katakana. I also know a lot of the general phrases. I don't really know if I should continue learning phrases and popular sayings or if i should study grammar. If you think studying grammar is the next step then how should i go about doing that?

I did study Japanese in different ways, and I must say I do think a good Japanese language school with organized material is still the most effective way to make quicker progress and have an overall grasp of the language (when it comes to Japanese specifically). I'm not sure what your goals are learning Japanese and which kind of student/learner you are, but down the road I'm not sure it really matters that much in which order you learn things. It should all somehow come together eventually. Have you ever learned a foreign language? I'd say go studying the theory, but watch lots of videos of subjects you like or already know something about even if you understand very little of them. Gambatte, ne? Good luck with your Japanese :)
