Speaking Mandarin Chinese in Western China In Xinjiang, what languages are spoken? If I visit larger cities such as Kashgar and Urumqi, which languages should I expect to hear? ... and perhaps more importantly, can I use Mandarin Chinese to chat with the locals? Culturally, cities such as Kashgar are clearly very different to the cities on the east coast, I'm wondering if totally different languages are used too?

If you've visited Xinjiang, which language did you use? Were you understood? ... Do you have any language tips? :)

For urumqi and north of xinjiang, mardarin is totally fine. The turkic language is more used in south of xinjiang. Actually, half of population in xinjiang is han ethnic, and they speak fluent mardarin without any accent.
