Native English Speakers and Chinese (Mandarin) Names

Hello all,

I had been watching an interview with Jon Huntsman, the former U.S. Ambassador to China, and he was exhibiting his Mandarin fluency on television. In the interview, he said he had a "Chinese name" (Hóng Bópéi), but I'm curious how exactly he came to that conclusion. How does one determine a name if they're a foreigner? Is it something given to them, chosen by themselves, or something else?

Easy to answer this question,at the beginning,he will ask a friend to give a name. When he knows Chinese a lot,he will make one himself or continue using the initial name if he likes that one

There has been a famous American called 大山in China.Do you know what is the meaning of 大山?Just mountain.hahaha.But it is really easy to remember. In that old time, not so many foreigners in China,an easy remembered name and a mouth of fluent mandarin make him famous in China.I have ever  been in a lesson called 大山English
