How have you found your purpose in life? Or how do you find it?

Hey,

Maybe this sounds like a very heavy topic discussing probably the most important question of life, but since we are here on iTalki in a multicultural group with different backrounds, different lifepaths and decisions, I'd like to know (only if you want to tell about it, of course) how you have found or plan on finding your purpose in life? Or is there nothing like this and life is only a puzzle made up of random pieces floating around you, while climbing towards the summit of life :D ?

Are there any strategies you may have discovered? I sometimes feel a little bit stucked when I look at my current situation (studying...)...

I know there a dozends of articles out there on the internet. However, I prefer advice given from real people instead of these "life gurus".

Thank you for your input and wise words :)

It is really quite difficult issue and for me including. But I decide our main goal in life to be happy and make happy other people. It doesn't matter what we choose from birth and breeding children to becoming Nobel candidate. To live unhappy life is most terrible thing which could be happen with us. And I noticed with age our goals are all the time changed. So I wish everybody to find favorite hobby and become happy.

A mother of a really close friend of mine passed away after a long fight against cancer. My friend was talking to her just some weeks before asking what she believed was the meaning of our short time on this planet, and she said exactly what someone already said above: to bring joy in the lives of those around you. At the funeral her spirit and conviction of the way how one should live was so tangible. Everyone had a story tell about how she had let the sun into their lives, even if only for some brief moments.

To be able to do that I believe one has to feel good in his/her own skin. Some of us are lucky to find a luxury job that brings fulfillment and sense of making a difference, accomplishments. But at the end of the day I believe it's down to one's perspective - the conscious decision of making the best of what we are dealt with. To see the sunny side, not the clouds. See an opportunity in an end to be able start with something new. Even the most trivial of jobs... doing it the best you can, will give you the feeling of having done your share. A bit like Peppo, the street cleaner, in Momo.... a conscious decision each morning when waking up to embrace the day and its opportunities, be grateful, make someone smile, help another, enjoy arts, nature, music, what little one has, friends, family, even difficulties and misfortune as there's always a door to something new, a lesson that will teach us something valuable, a new path to follow. When the day comes.. the meaning of life... that one has made a difference in the lives of others, be it however small in the special way you know best.

I'm 38 and what I can say from experience is that my purpose has evolved and I expect it to continue to change in the future. I've found that life breaks into chapters of 3-6 years that are normally started or ended with a bigger change (like starting university, having a baby, starting a business, splitting up with a long term partner, going travelling, etc.).

The best thing for finding purpose I've done is travel. The second most useful thing has been finding someone to talk to like a mentor. The third is writing a diary.

Good luck.
