Everyday UK Expressions (18): hit it off

Hit it off (with someone)

This is a positive expression for when you have met someone new and developed a good relationship with them very quickly. It can be used in any context, including business, with neighbours, social friendship, and romance.

For example: “A new next-door neighbour moved in at the weekend. We got talking over the garden fence and we hit it off straight away. It turned out that we’re both really into gardening. It looks like he’s going to be a good neighbour.”

Can you write your example sentence with “hit it off”?

Good work, Eva and Natalia.

I don't know if I can say that you knew how to use all the "hit" idioms correctly, Eva, as obviously cramming them into one paragraph affected its naturalness! But a native speaker could have written something similar to you if they had set themselves the same task.

And as for Carlo, I am sorry but the situation is too surreal for me to evaluate your usage! Feel free to try again if you want some boring feedback!

I am really lucky , because I have met such an interesting person on italki. We had a conversation already and we hit it off while we were talking for the first time.

Thanks to all three of you. Good examples. I was 85% sure that it was used in the same way in the USA!

(FYI, the same expression is common in the U.S. and used in the same way).
