Correct translation of "conviction" (as in a court of law) in Russian?

Hi,

I'm working on a translation and I've become confused about how to correctly translate "conviction" (being found guilty in a court of law) into Russian. I have come across признание виновным, судимость and осуждение. Can someone tell me what would be best to use?

Thank you!

All the three are correct. Which one you have to use depends on not only context but the precise juridical meaning.

1) The accused was found guilty by the court of appeal in the Hague. = По решению апелляционного суда Гааги обвиняемый был признан виновным.

2) The Court refused leave to appeal and affirmed the conviction and sentence. = Суд отказался предоставить возможность апелляции и подтвердил осуждение и приговор.

3) actions for damages did not depend on the existence of a criminal conviction or a disciplinary sanction. = действия, предпринимаемые с целью возмещения ущерба, не зависят от наличия уголовной судимости или дисциплинарной санкции

4) This right cannot be limited, and any criminal conviction by a body not constituting a tribunal is incompatible with this provision. = Это право не подлежит никаким ограничениям, и признание виновным любого лица органом, не являющимся судом, несовместимо с данным положением.

conviction as belief = убеждения used in plural form, conviction as confident = уверенность, conviction as judgement = осуждение
