Today I read article and there is one word I cannot catch the exact meaning for it

The sentence is" we might tell you that we need to crack your chest open to repair your damaged heart valve "

Allah save us all from it

But what does " crack " here mean ?

if we say crack mean open sentence will be we need to open your chest open ! how is that
