"Native English speakers are the world's worst communicators'

Hi everyone here are a few quotes from an article I read this morning on bbc.co.uk today. (title above)

"English speakers with no other language often lack awareness of how to speak English internationally" Dale Coulter

"Suddenly the Brit or the American walks into the room and nobody can understand them" Chia Suan Chong

In other words English works well as an international language as long as it is being spoken by a group of non-native speakers. The native speakers have no idea (or just don't care) what they non-native speaker may or may not understand probably using too much slang and too many idioms and not moderating their accents or speaking at a reasonable speed. Do you agree?

"Well, if God hadn't meant for everyone in the world to speak English, he wouldn't have written the Bible in it."

- actual opinion expressed an English-only-speaking American honestly unaware that of all the various languages in which the Bible was written, none of them were English

It bothers me a great deal that Americans can be such judgmental boors (maybe Brits can be boors, too, but as an American, I don't have to feel shame on their part). And it especially bothers me that the people who are quickest to yell "Why don't you just learn to speak English?" are the ones who have never even tried to study another language. I sometimes wish I could just plop them down in the middle of some large non-English-speaking city and let them try to find their way home.

That said, I think the answer lies in it being native speakers who have never studied another language who are the most at fault. Schools in the US generally only require foreign language for university-bound students, and that starting at the age of 13 or 14. Most schools for students age 6-12 do not offer any foreign language instruction at all. Maybe we're all just destined to be near-sighted insular boors anyway, but maybe we could at least give ourselves a chance.

As for me, this article is just nonsense and bulshit.

"Native English speakers are the world's worst communicators". Well, Milo Yiannopoulos proves otherwise. He is a great communicator on American ground/land.

Are you sure,  Evelyn, God wrote the Bible in English?

Well....it's really good to know)))

Interesting article. However, this is generally true for (monolingual) native speakers of any language. E.g. it explains a lot of the problems that a language partner of mine has been having with his German work colleagues.
