How do you say "Si yo estuviera aquí" in english

I have a big doubt. I've seen in some tweets in which to say in english "Si yo estuviera aquí" it's used "If I were here". It is correct?

I've understood that in singular it's used "Was". Why in this case it's used "were"?

Thanks for your help in advance!

"If I were here" (but I'm not) is correct. Hypothetical/unreal/impossible situation, second conditional.

Because it isn't a real situation it is a unreal condition
