Maltese? Does anybody speak/teach this language? Hello everybody, I would like to hear how sounds the Maltese language. They say it's a mixture of Arabic (close to Tunisian  dialect) Sicilian and English. Since my native tongue is Italian and I'm fluent in English and reached an intermediate level in Arabic, I wonder if I would understand something. Italki hasn't any Maltese teacher, but maybe somebody else can help. Thank you.

You're welcome. Unfortunately I can't give you a concrete answer since there isn't a link for the test. However, according to some sources south Tunisian already speaks Libyan dialect.

Maybe that's why TU/Libyan is higher then LB/Tunisian, or because we spake more pure Arabic then them ^_^.
Anyway, as a Libyan I think the result between LB/Tunisian and TU/Libyan should be same. Actually intelligibility should be higher than that. I'm saying that because I listen to a lot of Tunisian rap songs. I understand almost everything 97%. Regarding TU/Maltese and LB/Maltese maybe Tunisians are better because they are nearest to Malta.

I read about that before, which is quit interesting. Unfortunately, Maltese isn't a major language. Otherwise I would learn it.
You can find more information regrading intelligibility on this study.

I remember that this italki member was a Maltese teacher before, but it seems that he stopped

teaching now: https://www.italki.com/user/2652282

I remember that some of his discussions about Maltese language were interesting to me if you

would like to check them. Also you could ask him for some resources to learn the language. You

are right; 40% of Maltese is Arabic.

yes, I think you would - maybe after some sentences - understand some.

On www.tvm.com.mt you will find some videos you can listen to.

Thank you Mohammad for the link to the study comparing mutual intelligibility between Maltese, Libian and Tunisian dialects. Do you have an idea why Tunisians understand better Libians then vice-versa?

Tunisians also understand better the Maltese then then the Libians do..

interesting! Do you have any idea? Unfortunately there is no explanation on this on the slideshow.
