Power of habit - Charles Duhigg

I am a non-native speaker so please help to fix grammar. And if you care to this subject, don’t hesitate to share with me.

First of all, what I write just only subjective opinion that I take from this book.

Since long time, I've known this well-known sentence: consciousness make action then effect to habit and finally creat our life. However, author changed the order of action and habit, habit itself influence to our action. In daily life, there are many habits effect to action that we’ve not recognized. Why do you choose to eat fried chicken instead of mixed vegetable? Why do you wear blue dress instead of black one for today? Many questions.

In the first of the book, author show how power of habit is by way of lively illustrations. A patient who get problem with his brain can’t remember what he did within one minutes before. If you ask him to paint his house he will be completely impotent but if you ask him help to give you a water glass he will go immediately into the kitchen. Or other case, how an unemployed divorced obese woman changed since she’s given up her smoking habit. From author’s research, he launched principle to get a habit by cycle: idea -> action -> reward.

Especially, Pau O’Neil – former US Finance Minister - how he changed Alcoa or Starbucks changed the life of young man who dropped out his study and then become a top - level manager. What is role of habit? Crisis make worse situation but habit change faster if it’s putted in risk status, it pushed people to action without any order or requirement.

Have you ever thought that what you buy every day is influenced by supermarkets? Have you realized that you always turn right when you go to the supermarket? And if the fruit and vegetable stand are putted in the first aisle, on the top of your cart will be fast foods such as fries, ice cream, etc. when you go to cashier counter. Relying on your consumption habits, marketers can offer promotions to each personal when you think they're applied alike to everyone.

Not only impact on personal life, but also effect widespread throughout society. Has anyone ever thought about the issue of national liberation? Why did it not happen sooner or later but right at that time? Why did it stem from this man instead of others? How did the habit affect in the way that we perceive everything?

A man who kill his wife in his sleep was judged innocent, but a gambler wasting her inheritance was considered guilty? Although there is the same cause is deep-seated habits, they act without realizing they are doing it.

Conclusion, habits can be changed and how we can change it. Each person has different good or bad habits so there are thousands of different ways to change and there isn’t a general procedure. However, we can also apply the basic principles by try to identify elements in the circle “idea -> action -> reward”
