Fui: it is the past when you went to a place. Example: i went to the park - yo fui al parque 

Estuve: it is the past when you were in a place. Example: i was in the cinema - yo estuve en el cine 

Estaba and Estuve it is the same

Era: it is the past when you talk about your past history. Example: i was a docto - yo era un doctor

I would correct the first comment. First at all you may difference between Ser/Estar, and to some verbal shared forms as Fuí.

"Fuí can be referred to the verb "ir" - to go- and "ser" - to be-.

In this case if you say I went to the cinema you say; Fuí al cine. however if you particulary want to describe a part of yourself you would say I was a fool - yo fuí un tonto-.

You also can say "Era un tonto" but this would be said referring to a period of time.

And no, Estaba and Estuve are not the same. U can use both of them in some cases but there are some cases where they are different.

For example, "Estuve" means something finnished - not recently-, and with a concrete duration "Ayer estuve hablando con Maria".
Imagine you are talking by phone with someone and your mother hangs up your phone, you would answer her; "Estaba hablando con María", you cannot say "estuve hablando con maria" in this case.

Estaba: Es el pretérito imperfecto del verbo Estar. Ejemplo: "Yo estaba en mi casa cuando me llamaste". Uso Estar porque indico mi posición en un sitio, que es por tanto transitoria y uso el imperfecto porque destaco que estar en casa era algo no acabado aun cuando sucedió la llamada.

Sin duda, esto de los verbos Ser/Estar es una de las pesadillas más habituales para los que empezáis con el Español. Por partes:

Fui: Es el pretérito perfecto del verbo Ser. Es lo más parecido al Past Simple en Inglés. Ejemplo: "Yo fui campeón de tenis". Hace años jugué un campeonato de tenis y lo gané. Uso Ser porque no era algo transitorio en ese momento y el pasado simple porque ya considero ese hecho como acabado (ya ha habido otros campeones, etc...).

* Ojo. Fui también puede ser del verbo Ir. Su uso es diferente, tanto como to be es diferente a to go.

Era: Es el pretérito imperfecto del verbo Ser. Se parece al used to be en Inglés, pero no siempre. Ejemplo: "Yo era un niño muy bueno". Uso Ser porque ser un niño es algo estable y uso el pasado imperfecto porque hablo de un pasado que no era puntual, es decir, toda mi niñez.
