The U.S. poet and author Stephen Crane (1871-1900) is best known for the novel The Red Badge of Courage. He wrote some short poems. This is from War is Kind, published in 1899:

A man said to the universe:

"Sir I exist!"

"However," replied the universe,

"The fact has not created in me

A sense of obligation."
