Here in the USA, I would say the job market for language was pretty small. But that also depends on the city. Big cities like New York would have a larger market for language-related professions than a smaller city.

Here in Russia knowing foreign language is an asset you can use to improve your possibilities in career. My wife is certificied linguist, she knows french and english, but she works in trading, because she did not find linguist job. Although you can make good money if you can teach the language, especially Mandarin is very useful nowadays.
