"a" refers to something in general (it is known as an indefinite article)

EG. I want "a" dog. (I don't mind what kind of dog it is)

"the" refers to something specific (it is known as a definite article)

EG. I want "the" cute dog that I saw at the pet shop. (I want a specific dog)

but when "a" added to a noun,it means noun is unknown for us ex.I like a house which has a big yard means house is unknown for i and you
