What would be your response? Sadly, I came to see a comment made by one of the italki members in response to the question of a true learner of the English language who was almost disappointed with his/her level. The question was "How can I improve/expand my vocabulary?" But the comment was quite letting the asker down! "Hello, it's impossible! You can never get fluency in English, it's a sort of futile effort"

How would you personally respond to such a disappointing comment?

I'd say nothing to the person who made it, but I'd report the remark to italki with the "flag" button. It's a hostile remark. It doesn't help anybody learn anything. It's just an insult.

Why respond? Forget it and go on!

Steven Larrabee :   I realise we have strayed from the discussion proper, but I wonder why you are so determined to leave the US.  Many people around the world would give their right arm to do the opposite.

I didn't mean to be offensive ;  clearly you're not the type of American who gives rise to the stereotype you abhor.

Steven Larrabee :   You're an American, and you think that Henry Kissinger is a former US Head of State ?

Are you aware of the sort of criticism of Americans sometimes made by people from other countries ?

I would assume the comment comes from someone who is themselves frustrated for not being able to learn English as well as they would want to and already feels it is impossible. I would say the person who responded needs support themselves rather than criticism. I don't think such comments are hostile at all, unless if they come from a native speaker.
