I need a help with finding the grammatical structure used in the following sentence.


In 1980, thermal power stations were the main source of electricity in France, generating around 120 terawatt hours of power.


what is the function of " generating" here?

You're looking at a "participle clause", which adds extra information but cannot be a sentence by itself.

If we break the sentence into two separate sentences, we might have:

In 1980, thermal power stations were the main source of electricity in France.
These power stations generated around 120 terawatt hours of power.


Using a participle clause will give you the information more concisely and smoothly.
