Learning English has always been my greatest interest. I was bit weak in English and my school teachers had said "we don't expect much from in English language test" I took it as a challenge that day. Someone recommended me practicing Cambridge English book, and I started practicing it religiously... Believe me I got star marks in the English subject. All my teachers were surprised, but more happy for me. You just need to make a commitment to yourself that you would not give up....keep listening to English news, channels whatever interests you. That is the first stage and then practice English.. you will eventually find yourself much comfortable and fluent while speaking English... effortlessly. All the best!

I have been speaking to a young Chinese girl who lives in China and her English is very good. She watches podcasts in English and music. Course she does not understand everything but enough for us to have meaningful dialog. I think because she isn't trying so hard to understand everything and we enjoy conversing including our rephrasing and asking "do not understand?" Exposure to the language is most effective because it is difficult to pronounce words you have never heard. It is helpful to find programs you enjoy about subjects that interest you so you will be motivated to learn, and don't  try so hard, relax and enjoy the process rather than worry about results. I would strongly disagree with the idea of uprooting and leaving everything you know. My father came to New Zealand from Holland and he had his reasons though I doubt it was because he wanted to learn a new language.
