For the beginner French, I like Alter Ego books.
+ for grammar you can use the book of CLE International "Grammaire progressive du français". A1 - Débutants.

As an addition, I would recommend Duolingo + Memrise (apps that are good for learning all popular languages).

One of the best books I've ever used is an old French high school text that I even I started learning from, called French for Mastery.  It is out of print, but easily found on sites like Amazon.  There's also an video program, also quite old but very well done, called French in Action.  There is an accompanying book and workbook.  It starts out really basic with greetings, etc, and it is entirely in French.  All the videos can be found on Youtube now.  Each one is about 30 minutes with half being a dialogue and the other half in the classroom with the professor who makes the explanation.  It is quite good.
